Laura Van Wyk is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She earned her social work degree from New York University as well as her undergraduate degree from American University and a Master’s Degree in International Political and Economic Development from Fordham University.
Laura graduated from social work school in 2009 and earned her LCSW in 2017. Laura has practiced in numerous different settings since earning her social work degree including at Rikers Island as a mental health clinician for the most severely mentally ill women and men detained on the Island for approximately six years. She then went on to work in public defense at the Legal Aid Society where she was assigned as a mitigation specialist in the original team of the Homicide Defense Task Force.
In addition to working in forensics, Laura has also been practicing seeing clients in individual, family, and couples counseling first at the outpatient Nathaniel Clinic of CASES and now with BCS. She has experience working with clients who struggle with severe mental health diagnoses such as paranoid schizophrenia to working with clients who are seeking out treatment to address depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, addictions (both substance and process), as well as LGBTQ+ issues, and sexuality.
Laura is certified in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). She strongly believes in developing tailored and individual treatment plans that synthesize the tools of many different types of therapies that best match the strengths and preferences of each client she is working with to maximize the benefit of the therapeutic experience for them. She is particularly interested in treating individuals who would like to address depression, anxiety, life transitions, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and relationship and sexuality issues. Laura has also had significant experience working with the LGBTQ+ community.
