If you’re an intern interested in working with Pineapple Support, or a supervisor who would like to bring an intern onto your caseload, please reach out so we can guide you through the process.

FAQs
How does the payment process work?
We use a co-pay system. Clients pay you their portion before each session (the amount will be specified by Pineapple Support).
At month’s end, our therapist portal will automatically submit an invoice to us for the remaining balance of the sessions held, and we pay within 30 days.
How are clients referred?
We match clients based on location, needs, and specialty.
You’ll receive an email with their details and are asked to reach out directly to schedule the first session.
For confidentiality, always refer to clients by their allocated code – including on invoices.
How many sessions are provided per client?
After the initial assessment, therapists may allocate 8, 12, or 16 sessions based on the client’s needs.
The maximum number of sessions we can provide per client is 16, as this allows us to support as many people as possible within our limited budget and ongoing waitlist.
If a client reaches the 16-session limit and is assessed as at risk should care end, therapists may contact Pineapple Support to request an extension. While extensions are rare, we will always prioritise the safety, stability, and wellbeing of the clients in our care when making these decisions.
What do I need to report?
Pineapple Support does not request clinical notes.
You’ll access a secure portal to record which sessions were attended or missed, that’s all we require.
If a client is unreachable for 30+ days, please let us know so we can follow up.
If you are concerned a client is in crisis, you are legally obligated to contact local emergency services.
Can a client reapply for therapy?
Yes. Clients are welcome to reapply after completing their allocated sessions.
We ask that they wait 6 months before requesting new therapy, unless there is an urgent need for support. In such cases, Pineapple Support will review the request and determine the appropriate next steps to ensure the client receives timely support.
What if a client misses sessions?
If a client misses a session, they are responsible for paying the full cost of that session. Pineapple Support does not cover missed appointments. When a session is marked as missed in the secure portal, the client will automatically receive a notification reminding them of this policy and encouraging them to stay engaged in their therapeutic process.
If a client misses three sessions, their funded therapy through Pineapple Support will be paused, and their case will be closed. We will invite them to reach out again when they feel able to commit to regular attendance, as consistent engagement is essential for effective care and ensures we can responsibly use our limited resources to support others on the waiting list.
Do therapists need specific experience with sex workers or the adult industry?
No, but it is strongly preferred.
If you’re new to working with sex workers or supporting sexual concerns in session, we recommend completing the course How to Think Like a Sex Therapist to build confidence and competence in this area.
Can therapists offer in-person sessions?
Pineapple Support primarily provides online therapy, but in-person sessions may be offered if both therapist and client agree and it is clinically appropriate. The co-pay structure remains the same.
Are group sessions part of the therapist’s role?
Most therapists provide one-to-one counselling, but some may be invited to run support groups, host webinars or workshops, provide online promotional materials or join us at live events. This is optional and based on your specialty, interests, and availability.
Am I expected to handle crisis intervention?
Therapists should follow local laws and ethical guidelines regarding risk and crisis.
If a client is in immediate danger, therapists are legally required to contact local emergency services. Pineapple Support does not provide crisis management, but we will support you with guidance where appropriate.
How are session fees determined?
The therapist’s rate is agreed in advance between Pineapple Support and the therapist. Clients pay the co-pay portion directly to the therapist before each session, and Pineapple Support pays the remaining amount via monthly invoice.
Do therapists need to use a specific video platform?
No. Therapists may use any secure, encrypted platform they are already familiar with (such as Zoom, Doxy, or SimplePractice). The priority is client safety and confidentiality.
What happens if my licence or insurance expires?
All therapists must maintain up-to-date licensure and insurance at all times.
Our Therapist Relations & Compliance Manager (Kellie) will request updated documentation as needed. If your credentials lapse, you will be paused from taking new referrals until updated documents are provided.
Will Pineapple Support ever access clinical notes?
No. We never request or store detailed clinical notes.
We only require confirmation of attendance, missed sessions, and basic administrative information via the secure portal.
Are therapists required to take on a certain number of clients?
We ask that therapists commit to working with at least two clients through Pineapple Support.
That said, you are always free to pause referrals or accept or decline clients based on your availability, expertise, and capacity. There is no strict minimum or maximum caseload, we simply ask that therapists remain mindful and communicative about their availability so we can match clients appropriately.
You can update your availability at any time by contacting Kellie, our Therapist Relations & Compliance Manager.
Do you work with insurance providers?
No. Pineapple Support does not work with insurance providers, and our funded sessions cannot be billed to insurance.
However, if a therapist wishes to work directly with a client and their insurance provider outside of Pineapple Support, this is entirely at the therapist’s discretion.
Any such arrangements must be handled independently and are not connected to our funding structure or administrative processes.
